LP Racing and MZR win in GT2 European weekend at Spa-Francorchamps

The FANATEC GT2 European Series was one of the series that prepared the show for the CROWDSTRIKE 24 Hours of Spa, and with a pair of tight races at the Ardennes, the No. 1 LP Racing Maserati MC20 GT2 of Leonardo Gorini and Carlo Tamburini and the No. 812 MZR KTM X-BOW GT2 of Martin Koch and Reinhard Kofler got the wins of the weekend`s double header.

The No. 24 TFT Maserati kept the lead into a chaotic Turn 1 of the first race, but it took just half of a lap for the No. 1 LP Racing Maserati to take the lead, but the No. 812 MZR KTM had Martin Koch determined to break the trident’s 1-2-3.

By not being able to attack for more than 10 minutes due to the speed of the Maseratis, Koch actually opened the door for Gilles Vannelet in the No. 87 Akkodis ASP Mercedes, and once the full grunt of the Mercedes AMG GT2 could be used, he breezed past Alexandre Leroy in the No. 24, preparing the move on Louis Prette to get second place and the Am Cup lead.

During the pit window, the No. 87 ate another Maserati on the way as the No. 2 was dropped to a virtual second place since the top 2 at the time still had service to do. Carlo Tamburini then guided the No. 1 LP Racing Maserati to a comfortable win overall and in the Pro-Am Cup while Philippe Prette only confirmed the Am Cup and the second place overall for the No. 2 LP Racing Maserati in the final minutes as the No. 80 Razoon KTM took third place with the tumble that the No. 87 Akkodis ASP Mercedes had.

Race 2 had a 3-wide squabble behind the No. 18 LP Racing Audi, but the No. 80 Razzon KTM was glued at the rear wing of the leader, but the No. 98 Motorsport98 Mercedes used the usual grunt of the AMG GT2 to take third place, and the same move gave the second place to Loris Hezemans.

Pierre Kaffer did his job of keeping the No. 18 in the top spot, but Michael Doppelmayr wasn't able to keep Eric de Doncker in check, so the No. 98 took the lead and got away with it. The No. 18 kept tumbling down the order, so the No. 812 MZR KTM became the new leader. Martin Koch's stint became even more comfortable as the No. 98 was penalized due to pit lane speeding.

With the No. 98 penalized and the No. 87 Akkodis ASP Mercedes, the Am Cup win became also an overall second place while the No. 812 MZR KTM went straight to the win.
