The list of
good announcements for the years to come in sportscar racing doesn’t stop to
come, and the most recent one comes from Ford,
and it’s regarding a return to the 24
Hours of Le Mans.Ford is absent of Le Mans since 2011, when Robertson Racing used a Doran-built Ford GT to finish 3rd in the
LMGTE-Am class. 2011 was the last year of the Ford GT competing in the American Le Mans Series too, with the
same effort.
According
to a report by Autoweek.com, Ford
will build a new sportscar racer that will be showed at the North American
International Auto Show at Detroit. The new car will campaign in both the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship and
at Le Mans will be entered by Chip
Ganassi Racing, which is currently Ford’s factory team in TUSC with their
Ford/Riley DP. One of the cars is expected to have Ganassi’s current sportscar
drivers Scott Pruett and Joey Hand, and the use of drivers from
other racing fronts like IndyCar and
NASCAR can’t be discarded, although
nothing is confirmed at the moment.
In fact,
Ford’s comeback to Le Mans was already a speculation target from long ago, as
2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Ford’s first win at Le
Mans, with a bonus Ford GT 40 podium
sweep. The rumored models were a Mustang or a Ford GT, but is expected a
completely new approach in the future project, as well the adaptation of the Ford EcoBoost V6 powertrain for LMGTE specs.
