If you watch endurance racing since 15 years ago, at least you heard or read once about Welter Racing. The french-based team, clearly known by the uncommon design of its LMP models, last raced in a ACO-based event in 2008, with the car you see above, the WR LMP 2008. But, recent news suggest they may be in comeback route to race the Le Mans 24 Hours.
And for
this comeback, the WR team may use a recent Idea created by the ACO, that is
the Garage 56. Last outings of vehicles that entered in the Le Mans 24 Hours
using alternative and different ways of build a racecar, but while the first
two ideas featured different aerodynamics for more efficiency(DeltaWing) and
electricity power(Nissan ZEOD RC), WR intends to bring biogas into act.
The still
unnamed LMP car, will have a 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine fueled by a mix of
methane and carbon dioxide, fitted into a cryogenic tank and will feature
liquid injection. The project is led by Gerard Welter himself with some
ex-Peugeot names on it. Building will start in 2015, while presentation will be
at Le Mans, with the intention to race it in 2016.
Curiously,
it wasn’t the first try to entry a gas fueled prototype into Garage 56, as
GreenGT tried to field a Le Mans Prototype with hydrogen fuel cell on it in
2013, but with lack of time to build the complex fuel system, they failed to
enter the Le Mans 24 Hours that year.
