Volante Rosso expands operation with a McLaren 720S GT3 Evo

Volante Rosso
is known for being one of the frontrunner squads in GT World Challenge Australia, and while their Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is staying with the team, they will have an extra weapon on track in form of a recently acquired McLaren 720S GT3 Evo, with the national series campaign coming after a double entry at the Bathurst 12 Hour.

Neither Volante Rosso nor McLaren are strangers to Mount Panorama, but it will be a return to a multi-car effort for the team since they scaled down to the single Aston Martin after racing a pair of Mercedes AMG GT3 Evos there.

There was also a change of heart in terms of lineups for the 12 Hour, with focus on local based talent, with the McLaren having Supercars newcomer Rylan Gray, Porsche Cup specialist Bayley Hall and the equally young Marcos Flack, who recently moved from Formula 4 racing to sportscars, being mostly on Porsche Cup machinery, and this will put the McLaren in the GT3 Silver class.

For the Aston Martin, the change is dramatic, as it featured Jamie Day, Roberto Villagomez and Jaylyn Robotham last year, but while it relies on international talent like Andrés Pato and Maxime Robin, this will be more balanced with Australian talent as experienced Supercars driver Bryce Fullwood joins in with Thailand Super Series TA2 racer Damien Hamilton, with the Aston staying in the GT3 Pro-Am class.

While McLaren still appeared in the 12 Hour, it will be the first time since 2020 that a GT3 spec McLaren will appear in the race, and despite the fact that the 720S was already used for it, the Evo version will make its debut in the mountain.

Between the 27 GT3 cars that are already confirmed, Volante Rosso will have a somewhat small issue that their cars will be the only ones from their respective manufacturers, limiting the scope of information to themselves, with the field being dominated by Mercedes and Porsche, with occasional entries from BMW, Audi and Ferrari, as well two Corvettes and a Ford Mustang.
