The FIA World Rallycross Championship still had a void to fill, in which the FIA expected to include Australia, as it was the plan since the 2024 season, but with the plans failing to bring a positive conclusion, Istanbul came to the rescue again to close the season, with double the action to bring the curtains down to the 2025 season.
The initial plans for Australia involved a season ending round for 2024 and 2025, but after lots of discussions, things simply didn’t go ahead and the focus was changed to China, and with Hong Kong hosting the final weekend of 2023, the chances of having a round there were fairly high, but not even this paid dividends, and with not many alternatives at disposal, the return to Istanbul was a handy addition, since the Istanbul Park is located in the Asian portion of the Turkish territory.
Unlike 2024, Türkiye already has a round scheduled in the calendarm and since the 2024 edition proved to be a success despite the emergencial treatment it had, the best course of action was to secure another round in the country instead of looking for potential new venues.
The World RX isn’t the only rallycross championship that used the double header final as a remedial measure, as RallyX had to include another round at the Estering finale to cover for the missing fourth round at KymiRing, as the track condition limited the activity to only one round spread over Saturday and Sunday, which caught the attention of the World RX staff as the Finnish circuit will be held on 24 August.
While the Round 5 is now set to 20 September while the Round 6 occupies the 21 September date, the latest calendar change is still subject of approval in the next World Motor Sport Council meeting.
