The FIA World Rallycross Championship is in a moment of massive instability and uncertainty for the short term, with some rounds of the 2025 season already canceled while other remain in doubt as some points need to be clarified, and without a promoter to take care of things, the FIA itself will be in charge of the promotion and management.
After four years in charge of the competition, Rallycross Promoter left the competition once he 2024 season ended, being responsible for bringing the electric vehicles to the top class and expanding the borders with a return to South Africa and the first visit to the Far East, when it raced at the streets of Hong Kong, but the very limited grids, with numbers only nearing double digits most of the time, and the accident which burnt Special ONE Racing’s cars and equipment at Lydden Hill didn’t play in their favor.
The FIA announced early in the year that a decision over the World RX future would come in late February at best, and in the meantime the competition lost its season opener at Trois-Rivières, as nothing was set to allow it to hold the ice race round planed for the circuit. It was this uncertainty that also led to the KymiRing date being offered to RallyX while next season opener in line, which was Nyirád, had its date given to the Czech Autocross Championship, so for the moment the season opener is Lousada, in Portugal, which is on full steam with the renovation works to host the event.
While the tender was presented late in 2024, the consensus is that no company showed up to act as a promoter, and without a name in charge, the FIA went for the final option which is to take over operations to itself, being in direct control of all aspects that constitute the World RX season, and this will be extended to the popular FIA Euro RX Championship, which, contrary to the World RX, has been quite popular between the competitors with some rounds registering bumper grids and massive interest in general.
A full calendar for 2025 will be announced soon, but while KymiRing and Nyirád need to sort out their event dates and Istanbul Park and Australia are in doubt, World RX counts with Lousada and Höljes as the confirmed venues. Also, Hoosier is confirmed to continue as the championship’s tire supplier.
