Kristoffersson leaves Mettet with a win on Sunday

No matter how many times the competition tries, Johan Kristoffersson keeps finding the way back to the wins in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, closing the weekend at Mettet with another win to the collection of the 2024 season and stretching his lead in the table.

While Johan Kristoffersson was displaying his usual dominance in the Heats, he was followed by a Niclas Grönholm rising from the ashes, as the same two wins as Johan made the Finn beat the disastrous Saturday he had with a PWR RX1e that was refusing to leave the grid slot. The remainder of the field was really bunched up in the points, with the curious fact that René Münnich finished the session in third while Ole Christian Veiby was seventh, in part due to his compromises to allow Kristoffersson to score as much points possible.

Semifinal 1 had Kristoffersson leading from the go while Timmy Hansen had to literally bump Veiby  out of the way as the Norwegian was trying to lock Hansen in the barriers to get second place. Kristoffersson had so much advantage that he won by lifting off in the final lap to conserve equipment while Veiby stood firm in second place by leaving the dust to Timmy Hansen.

In Semifinal 2, the CEDT PWRs had the front row and they stood there as Kevin Hansen passed Anthony Pelfrene for third place to try to catch Klara Andersson. Grönholm and Kevin Hansen held their positions as Andersson just had to return to third place once Pelfrene did his Joker Lap.

The Final had Kristoffersson leading as usual while the melee broke for second place, which favored Kevin Hansen while Grönholm and Veiby were following the Peugeot 208 RX1e. With the win out of reach, holding Veiby was the next priority, and while Hansen’s tactics worked in full on Lap 4, the final lap saw Kevin Hansen finish second while Timmy Hansen didn’t have time to attack Veiby, who completed the podium.

Mettet RX II - Event results

Despite the facts that there are four events left in the calendar, it’s becoming clearer that Kristoffersson will go straight to another title, with 153 points scored against the 114 from Veiby, 110 from Kevin Hansen and 109 from Timmy Hansen. The competition resumes with the last round in European territory, as Montalegre hosts the penultimate double header on 7 and 8 September.
