WRT completes Misano weekend with Race 3 win

WRT counted again with a change of fortunes to win at Misano in the second GT World Challenge Europe weekend of 2020, with the third and final race going for the No. 32 Audi R8 LMS Evo, which led a podium controlled by the Ingolstadt manufacturer.

Again starting from pole, the No. 15 Tech1 Lexus made total use of Misano’s characteristics in its favor to control the top sport, leaving no space for the No. 55 Attempto Audi and the No. 32 WRT Audi. With quite the effort, Thomas Neubauer was able to stay away from the Audi pursuit team until the pit window opens, where time loss played against them, throwing the No. 15 to seventh.

The No. 32 WRT Audi took the lead instead with the No. 25 Sainteloc Audi and the No. 55 Attempto Audi behind it, and gaps were secure enough to not bother about being attacked and lose positions.

Further back, the No. 15 Tech1 Lexus still had the Silver Cup lead despite the pit problems, but Aurelien Panis was watching with attention the battle for fifth between the No. 107 CMR Bentley and the No. 31 WRT Audi. After all the pressure from Kelvin van der Linde, Nelson Pantiatici eventually conceded it, but as he tried to fight back, he lost control and the No. 107 collected the No. 15, with the two cars going to the barriers and the Safety Car being called with almost 10 minutes to go.

Ironically, the No. 107’s accident gave the Silver Cup lead to the sister No. 108 CMR Bentley, to which the No. 15 had quite the advantage.

Not even the caution period could shake off the top-3 positions, and just the No. 32 WRT Audi just needed to pull away from the immediate challenge to win the race with authority.

There was no changes in the Silver Cup too, with the No. 108 CMR Bentley also keeping position and the win, and in the Pro-Am Cup the No. 93 Tempesta Ferrari prevailed again in a close affair in the final moments.

After the Misano triple header, Charles Weerts and Dries Vanthoor lead the table with 52.5 points against 46 from Kelvin van der Linde and 38 from Raffaele Marciello and Timur Boguslavskiy, while Christopher Haase is in a close fourth with 37.5 points.

WRT has a more comfortable lead between the teams, with 65.5 points against 41.5 from AKKA-ASP and 41 from Sainteloc.

In the other classes, Chris Froggatt and Edward Cheever lead the Pro-Am Cup standings while Ezequiel Perez Companc is in the top of the Silver Cup table.

Now attentions turn to the next event, the Endurance Cup race at Nürburgring on 6th September, with the six hour race starting on Midday to end in the late afternoon.
