After seeing a good portion of the FIA World Rallycross Championship calendar being moved or axed due to reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the inclusion of a venue in the schedule is a nice surprise, and Kouvola especially is more celebrated as the Finnish circuit is returning to the Worldwide championship.
The confirmation of Kouvola’s return was stated in the results of the latest World Motor Sport Council meeting, which was held remotely due to the current health and safety restrictions. In some way the Kouvola RX takes the spot from the Lohéac RX, cancelled amid staff safety concerns, but instead of being allocated in September, the Finnish event will be back to back with the championship kick-off at Höljes, set to be held on 30th August.
Kouvola’s return comes after five seasons away from globe-trotting competition, as a rainy event in 2014 saw a wildcard victory from Tanner Foust in a Marklund Motorsport Volkswagen Polo RX, which also held the record of being the only wildcard event win in World RX until the 2019 Höljes RX, when Sebastian Eriksson conquered the home event with the Olsbergs Fiesta ST RX Mk 8.
According to multiple reports, the event will be hosted by SET Promotion instead of the national motorsport association, which adds to the management of multiple RX2 entries and of the GRX TANECO World RX supercar team.
No further calendar changes were done, so all other events will keep dates from the previous announcement, and initially the events are set to be held under closed doors.
2020 World RX calendar:
Höljes RX - 23rd August
Kouvola RX - 30th August
Riga RX - 20th September
Spa RX - 4th October
Montalegre RX - 11th October
Barcelona RX - 18th October
Abu Dhabi RX - 31st October
