Monday
is a day of... EKSRX announcement! One of the last teams to
still confirm the program for the 2016 season of the FIA World
Rallycross Championship, the Swedish team with the same machine
from 2015 but with a renewed driver lineup.
EKSRX
owner and multi-task driver Mattias Ekström made an open air
live presentation under typical Swedish weather (of course it's
snowy) to the fans on Facebook, to not only present the pair of Audi
S1 EKS RX machines but also to confirm a famous sentence in the
rally world that can be useful in rallycross: “If you want to win,
take a Finn.”
Following
what most of the media and fans gave as a sure choice, Toomas
'Topi' Heikkinen will be Ekström's team mate for the season to
come, putting EKSRX as one of the top forces this year.
The
24 years old Finnish driver has a Red Bull GRC title with Olsbergs
MSE in 2013 to count on his favor, and after that his two seasons
driving a Volkswagen Polo RX for Marklund Motorsport were a mix of
ups and downs in World RX, going from a lost title fight and a
runner-up finish in 2014 to a lacklustre 9th place in 2015
with a victory, two podiums and four finals. As Anton Marklund
returns to Marklund Motorsport, now combined with VW Team Sweden to
create the VW RX Sweden team, Heikkinen's arrival at EKSRX can
be considered as a trade between the two teams.
Ekström
had a good 2015 season for someone splitting between two
championships in a full time basis, as he got a win at Höljes and
runner-up finishes at Lydden Hill and Rosario while being really
close of the DTM title. His best results were roughly the same in
every World RX season, so he just needs to setp up his game during
the season as a whole.
