As if the World RX of Italy event wouldn’t have enough things to pay attention, with a Kia Rio RX with Gigi Galli inside and AndyJordan playing deluxe sub to Mattias Ekström, another big name will drive a 600-hp monster at Franciacorta, who is known as Gianni Morbidelli.
The former Formula 1 driver is currently driving
in the new TCR International Series in a full time campaign, and was called by
his former boss and current touring car team-mate René Münnich to join ALLInkl.com
Münnich Motorsport to be also his rallycross team-mate, as he substitutes
the Swede Alx Danielson in the
second Audi S3 RX of the German team, which had not only the mentioned drivers,
but also Tommy Rustad and Timo Scheider, which counts Morbidelli as the third
driver to make an one-off appearance for thesquad.
Even though
most of the public knowledge about Morbidelli will go back to his F1 days, he is in fact another touring
car guy that is joining the FIA World
Rallycross Championship group, as his career also has entries in the BTCC,
ETCC, Italian Superturismo, V8 Supercars, WTCC and also two titles in the
defunct Superstar International Series. Like Andrew Jordan, his touring car
background and probably his F1 experience will help in the handling the World
RX supercar, as well with the toughness of the competition.
History has
been good for Morbidelli on Italian soil, as well with Münnich Motorsport, as
in 2014 he won one race in the black and red painted Chevrolet Cruze TC1 for
Münnich, and his latest victory was extacly a few miles away of
Franciacorta, as he dominated the Monza
weekend of the TCR International Series. If he can replicate these performances
on October 18th, we will only know when we see the car in action.
