Euro RX1 entries confirmed for Nyirád opener

It took some time and a bunch of late hour deals, but the grid for the FIA Euro RX1 Championship opening round at Nyirád is defined, again with some of the World RX level talent being alongside national heroes and exciting prospects.

19 cars will be present in Hungary, which will also be part of the updated event format announced before the end of 2022 along with the sketch of the 2023 calendar, bringing back a more traditional event format. Between full time and part time entries, basically the whole field confirmed was present at Nyirád or further in the season, with the exception of Maté Benyó from the Hungarian and CEZ championships and Hans-Jøran Østreng from RallyX Nordic, but still some of the established contenders had their share of changes.

After doing a one-off with style in a Ford Fiesta RX at Nyirád last year, Patrick O’Donovan visited the Hansen World RX Team’s headquarters to confirm the acquisition of a Peugeot 208 WRX, which will be under the Team RX Racing banner alongside the father Ollie’s Proton Iriz RX. While not making a vlog of it, Andreas Bakkerud was on visit to another established team too, being invited to test Tamás Kárai’s Audi S1 RX at Nyirád while also setting a late deal to race it while Kárai himself will move to a newly built car, taking advantage of Bakkerud’s input to further develop both.

At first, current champion Anton Marklund wasn’t supposed to return to defend his title, but neither was his 2022 team SET Promotion, only to land a late deal to appear for the whole season on a new project, and to explain how late was the agreed deal, basically the car will be revealed near the first Euro RX1 round as the team’s Hyundai i20 RX used last season was already sold.

Janis Baumanis will stay with the Peugeot 208 WRX that he raced last year under the #YellowSquad banner, but this time under a new organization, as Baumanis to an all-Latvian crew while still receiving some support from the Hansen WRXT satellite squad.

The Nyirád opener will be held on 30 April, and while it wasn’t confirmed which entries will in full time for the 2023 season, most of them are expected to race past the Hungarian round.
