World RX finale confirmed for Hong Kong

The 2023 season is expected to be a game changer for the FIA World Rallycross Championship in the current RX1e era, as some of the binds that still held the competition were gone, with a multi-continental schedule being present again, and the expected visit to Asia finally has a place to hold it, which is Hong Kong.

In a presentation held this Thursday (21), the new event was presented, set to be called the World RX of Hong Kong, and confirmed to be the first event to be held in a city centre, with the Central Harbourfront Space next to the Victoria Harbour being the exact place where the new circuit will be developed by Volvo Construction Equipment. While a city circuit might be a new thing for World RX, it’s not a new thing altogether, as the defunct Global Rallycross Championship used the streets of Los Angeles in the early 2010s.

After three seasons being confined in Europe due to the effects of the COVID pandemic, not only the World RX will be back to other continents, but it will also visit the Far East for the first time, going the other way after years visiting North America, while Africa remains represented by the Killarney Circuit in Cape Town, South Africa.

As with the case of Cape Town RX, the Hong Kong RX will feature a double header as only the World RX cars will fly over to Africa and Asia. While entry lists will be revealed closer to the event dates, the last rounds of the season tend to open opportunities for young drivers and also for local talent, with the last local competitors in South Africa being Ashley Haigh-Smith and Mark Cronje.

For Asia, rallycross representation is still low, with only Ma Qinghua making a guest appearance at the 2018 Silverstone RX, and some small events being held in Japan and China, like the JRX Exhibition at Ebisu and XRacing at Xiamen, which was supported by STARD.

The Hong Kong RX double header will be held on 11 and 12 November.
