SRO announces 2022 calendars for GTWC Europe and GTWC America

Out of what can be planned ahead of the 2022 season, SRO is already in movement, having confirmed the calendars for two series of its flagship brand, the FANATEC GT World Challenge, with the Europe and America series being in the list.

The GTWC Asia is obviously absent at the moment, since the COVID-19 situation in Asia doesn’t let the French organization do that much movement, in special after the series being canceled for two seasons straight, despite lengthy efforts to have a season in both 2020 and 2021. While the continent can’t receive a proper series, national competitions are in action as planned, given the limits they work into due to health and safety concerns, like Super GT in Japan and China GT.

Back to Europe, the main SRO series doesn’t feature much changes in its calendar for 2022, though what catches immediately the attention is that Nürburgring, a long time host of SRO competition and previous hold of the 1000 km endurance race, won’t be in for the next season, being replaced by Hockenheim in the same early September date. Hockenheim was used this season for the GT2 European Series standalone event, and SRO decided to move towards the Baden-Würtemberg based circuit.

Along with the venue change, Brands Hatch returns to its April date, as this season the Sprint Cup round was held in late August to allow spectators on track, per the plan released by the UK government to free some restrictions to open events and market. The other circuits seen in 2021 will be there in 2022, including the newcomer Valencia round that will host the Sprint Cup finale.

For the American series, there wasn’t many changes too, although a void in the second slot of the calendar raises doubts over the Circuit of the Americas. Sebring moves from being a last minute emergency plan to confirmed venue in the calendar, confirming its position as the last sprint event of the season, just before the Indianapolis 8 Hour IGTC race.

The only major date change featured in the calendar is for Watkins Glen, returning to July after being moved to August this year before being eventually written off the schedule.
