McConnell starts RallyX Nordic season with win at Nysum

It wasn’t just the first win in the Supercar class for Jamaican rising Fraser McConnell at the RallyX Nordic opener at Nysum, it was way more than that. The Olsbergs MSE driver beat established and rising names of the class in his Olsbergs Fiesta ST Mk. 8 covered with sponsors from his homeland, worth the huge celebration as Frazz is basically an exception to the rule coming from Caribbean lands, while also proving that the Nynäshamn-based outfit gets it right with quick learning youngsters.

Triple World RX champion Johan Kristoffersson soon discovered right at the qualifying that the unknown track of Nysum wouldn’t be his only opponent, as Sondre Evjen took the top spot in Q1, while the KMS driver took it back with the Q2 win after being second in Q1, while Fraser McConnell, Ulrik Linnemann, Andreas Carlsson and Anders Michalak were exchanging blows for third position. An incredible performance from Enzo Ide in Q3 put the Belgian on top and in third in the intermediate standings, only behind the team mate Sondre Evjen and of top qualifier Johan Kristoffersson.

In the first semifinal, Kristoffersson and Ide got too busy with their own clash that let Ulrik Linnemann slip past them both, with the Dane having the tough job of holding both the KMS Volkswagen Polo and the EKS JC Audi S1. No one was eager to do any favors, but Ide got the worst end of the situation, as he watched Linnemann and Kristoffersson cross the line in first and second, and also watched Fraser McConnell find a gap to pass and take third place in the final corners.

In Semifinal 2, Sondre Evjen had a rocket start, but this wasn’t enough to open a gap to Andreas Carlsson, who was also trying to find a gap to overtake. When the race settled down, Evjen was able to open the gap and win with certain ease over Carlsson, with Anders Michalak coming home third.

The Final had Evjen taking advantage over Linnemann, but with McConnell and Kristoffersson pressing behind, things got messy and the Jamaican driver took the lead with Kristoffersson hot in his rear bumper. Betting in an early joker was the game for Kristoffersson, but a mistake for Andreas Carlsson held the World RX champion, opening the way for McConnell to see the checkered flag first after departing from fifth.

McConnell celebrated a lot his first Supercar win, and the Jamaican explained that the main idea was to take advantage of early carnage, which actually worked due to how crowed the first corners were. The Final winner of round 1 has 24 points in the standings, behind Sondre Evjen’s 25 and Kristoffersson’s 26 points.

The action at Nysum continues this Sunday, with the events starting at 10 A.M. CET (8 A.M. GMT).
