Marcus Grönholm joins Projekt E grid at Spa-Francorchamps

While not entirely confirmed, the Projekt E grid for the Spa RX weekend will have an incredibly special guest starter, as Marcus Grönholm will jump into a Ford Fiesta ERX from Ferratum Team, which already aligned a car this season for Janis Baumanis, which came home in second at Riga.

Technically, Grönholm’s motorsport career ended in 2012 due to injuries related to a serious accident at the X Games at Los Angeles, so he’s been acting in the background by taking care of the GRX Taneco operation in the World RX, in which his son Niclas races currently, but recently he was sampling different kinds of machinery in both rallycross and rally, his natural habitat.

Prior to the tests with Ferratum Team in the Fiesta ERX, he competed at Höljes in RallyX Nordic’s legends class with a Hyundai i20 RX and actually did a time comparable to the World RX regulars, much to the surprise of Niclas. Marcus said he will join the grid to get more impressions from the Projekt E machinery, and like at Höljes, he intends to not get into rough fights at Spa, making sure he isn’t returning full time.

The Projekt E series standings is currently topped by Natalie Barratt, but she was the only one that competed the two rounds held, with the Höljes round being won by Ken Block and the Riga event having Cyril Raymond as the winner. At the moment only two models are available for competition in the series, which are the Ford Fiesta ERX, already a year old model, and the Citroën C3 ERX, recently presented and with only an event of mileage.

The Spa-Francorchamps round will be held on 22 November, sharing track time with the World RX and the Euro RX as it was in the previous weekends.
