Szabo secures World RX drive with GRX

The FIA World Rallycross Championship had to overcome some changes as it faces the same scenario as all other racing competitions around the World due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the drivers market is having changes too, and Krisztian Szabo is one of the guys in the move, finding a home with GRX SET for this season.

Szabo jumps into the third Hyundai i20 RX, in equal spec to the full time drivers Niclas Grönholm and Timur Timerzyanov. This third Hyundai was used last year part time by Reinis Nitiss and Toomas Heikkinen, with Nitiss scoring its best result with a third place at Höljes, which matched the result of the other part timer of the team, Joni Wiman, but that obviously didn’t come any closer of the campaigns of the permanent drivers, with Grönholm finishing fourth despite missing rounds due to appendicitis and Timerzyanov finished fifth, finding his way back to victory at Spa-Francorchamps in a hugely celebrated weekend.

Szabo is moving from EKS and its Audi S1 EKS RX where he was fourth at Abu Dhabi and fifth at Silverstone, with consistency being what stands out in his 2019 season, missing the semifinals only once, but his link with EKS comes from before the team’s last hurrah in World RX, as Mattias Ekström offered the platform for him to jump into the supercars from Super 1600 in 2018, joining Euro RX and getting a runner-up finish at Lohéac and ending in the final at Riga.

Szabo will appear with GRX SET at the Höljes RX double-header on 22nd and 23rd August, and still needs to confirm the other rounds where he will participate, but GRX is already up to speed as it’s using RallyX Nordic to warm up for the upcoming World RX season.
