Montalegre secures World RX return for 2020

The World RX fanbase, and more specifically the Portuguese one, took a surprise blow at the end of 2018, as the Montalegre circuit was axed off the FIA World Rallycross Championship despite having a multi-year deal in place, but the turnaround came last Friday (25) when a new deal was signed to put the circuit back to the World stage.

The new deal was signed at Montalegre, and both parts were quite glad with the better deal, that even sees a one year extension as a clause, but also is safer for both in the event of a contract break due to lack of interest.

Montalegre has its name in the World RX as its first venue, back in 2014, and it kept its spot as the start of the season until 2016, when Barcelona took the place, though the Montalegre RX kept an early spot in the calendar, with this bringing one of the most unusual moments in the discipline, as the semifinals and the final of the 2018 edition were held in the middle of a surprise snowstorm, won by double champion and current WTCR driver Johan Kristoffersson.

It is uncertain where the Montalegre RX will be placed in the calendar, so it will be a wait and see approach for when it will be and which venues will remain for 2020, with an announcement expected for this week.

While we wait for confirmations in the 2020 calendar, the 2019 season still has an event to go in order to crown the champion, as the Cape Town RX will be held on November 9th.
