Scott Speed wins ARX event in Canada

Scott Speed could have all the reasons to celebrate more than his win in the third event of the Americas Rallycross Championship, held at Trois-Rivières, but Tanner Foust’s recovery during the weekend kept the title fight alive, though now it’s practically down to both VW Andretti drivers.

Scott Speed was flawless during qualifying, securing the top in all four heats while followed by Ken Block and Chris Atkinson. Block was involved in a collision that sent Tanner Foust to the barriers on Q2, and this forced the Andretti driver to climb up the latter, though he couldn’t go higher than fifth.

On semifinal 1 Scott Speed led Tanner Foust into a VW Andretti 1-2, and the strong pace of both Beetles was simply too much for Chris Atkinson as he didn’t manage to even get near them.

Semifinal 2 had the Loenbro Fords holding station and doing a 1-2 at the start while Patrik Sandell went for the Joker really early in hopes of better place on clean air. The rest of the race was pretty uneventful, with Ken Block dominating it and winning while Sandell passed Steve Arpin for second as his early Joker strategy paid off dividends.

The final Fords, VWs and Subarus represented in double and again Speed and Foust were holding the lead, though Foust was suffering the threat of Ken Block. Block saw he couldn’t go past the Beetles and went to Joker on Lap 4, but neither Block or Foust were able to close down on Speed, who completed the weekend with a well deserved win.

Scott Speed holds quite a tiny margin to Tanner Foust in the standings as he has 86 points against 77 of his VW Andretti team mate while third placed driver Patrik Sandell has almost no chance to fight for the title with his 58 points scored. The action goes back to Texas as the Circuit of the Americas holds the final event of the first ARX season, this time joining the World RX of USA schedule on September 30th.
