To the world... the LMP3 category

And after so many years of discussion and especulations, the third tier of Le Mans Prototypes was presented to the world, and finally with kown regulations, this is the point where constructors and teams will start to work.

This weekend the LMP3 platform was presented by ACO in two different locations: the Austrian Red Bull Ring and the Korean Inje Speedium, as they were hosting rounds of their ACO regional series, the ELMS and the AsLMS, which will be based the new category, as a replacement to the now defunct LMPC category, created in 2009, as a solution for teams that wanted to do a cheap investiment into Le Mans Prototype ranks.

The technical part of the category seems pretty exciting, which has the performance goal to stay between the LMP2s and the LMGTEs at a low cost. Engines will be the same, a naturally aspirated V8 with 420 hp, produced and sold by ORECA, which will offer trackside service too. Use of engines by season will be limited at one unit, which needs to last 10.000 km. There will be a large number of spec parts, and tyres will Porsche Cup-sized. Body will be mandatory a coupé, and needs to feature a carbon chassis with a metal rollbar, a shark fin over the engine cover and opening on the wheel arches. It will be needed a crash test homologation by FIA too.

The price of the LMP3s will be around 195.000 euros, with a full season campaign in ELMS/AsLMS needing no more than 350.000 to 400.000 euros, and the rules will suffer no changes for 3 years. At the moment, SORA Composites, Tatuus, Juno, Riley Technologies, as well other companies  are interested or in process of building their LMP3 cars.

The LMP3s will come to track in 2015, with the first cars going to track test maybe at the end of 2014. The expectation is not to have a minimum number of entries, is to have entries and debut the new platform, as it was announced by ACO.
