WRT wins ESport GT Pro finale at Barcelona

There was just one round left in the FANATEC ESport GT Pro Series calendar, and a race that was expected to go to the Lamborghini camp went for the No. 30 WRT BMW M4 GT3 of a consistent Calan Williams.

Fabrizio Crestani was leading the field and was benefited by the chaos from second place to the back, which gave the runner-up spot to Laurin Heinrich. The No. 58 GRT Lamborghini is the most advanced GT3 in Assetto Corsa Competizione as well in the real world, and in a flowing circuit like Barcelona, the engine brake map trick that the Huracán GT3 Evo2 has would be incredibly useful to not lose time in the corners.

All three class leaders were in the overall top-3, so passing would demand a lot of negotiation, except for Calan Williams as the No. 30 WRT BMW had the No. 9 Boutsen VDS Audi of Adam Eteki eight behind to fight for the Gold Cup lead. A bit in front, second placed and Pro Cup leader Laurin Heinrich had even more reasons to conserve his lead as second in Pro Cup Nicklas Nielsen had a 5 second penalty in his neck for causing a collision, and Jordan Pepper followed Nielsen with 10 seconds applied to the No. 63 Iron Lynx Lamborghini.

The pit window was going smoothly, but when the leaders decided to pit in the final minutes of it, penalties were applied everywhere, as Crestani got a Stop and Go for track limits, Heinrich got a Drive Through and Pepper got 10 seconds for not pitting within the window time, and despite Pepper staying on track, Williams was the de facto leader with Eteki in pursuit of the No. 30 WRT BMW, while Dan Harper was leading the Pro Cup from fourth and the No. 10 Boutsen VDS Audi of Cesar Gazeau was the new Silver Cup leader with the No. 99 Tresor Audi of Alex Aka trying to close the gap.

The race settled in the final minutes as the No. 30 WRT BMW confirmed domination with nearly six seconds to the No. 9 Boutsen VDS Audi, while the No. 998 ROWE BMW took the Pro Cup win from third overall and the No. 10 Boutsen VDS Aui took Silver Cup honors from fourth.
