Scheider wins thrilling Cape Town RX Sunday event

Timo Scheider
was returning to the FIA World Rallycross Championship with the least mileage in the now standard Zeroid X1, and the DTM ace showed learning ability beyond comprehension in the Cape Town RX weekend, being immediately on top tier pace on Saturday and then on top of the podium on Sunday, as his first victory finally came with AllInkl.com Münnich Motorsport.

While Johan Kristoffersson won the Heat 1, Timo Scheider got more understanding of how to maneuver the Zeroid X1 and opened the edge he got against the Swedish driver, winning the subsequent two Heats and being the top qualifier, while results all over the place placed Kevin Hansen in third and Timmy Hansen in fourth. Failures in the battery meant that Ole Christian Veiby had trouble to even start, a reflex from a stall in Heat 1, and he barely was outscored by a totally off the pace René Münnich.

Semifinal 1 had Scheider jumping right into the lead by making use of Turn 1’s inside line while Niclas Grönholm used the space behind Scheider’s car to get second place as he bullied Kevin Hansen out of the way. Veiby had the urgency to close down the gap to at least fight for third place, but since the suspension of his car basically gave out on Lap 4, the three remaining drivers just had to do the Final Lap to secure spots in the Final, with Scheider being followed by Hansen and Grönholm.

In Semifinal 2, despite René Münnich delaying the proceedings with a jump start, Kristoffersson had no issues to top the field, and while Timmy Hansen kept a close watch from second place, he wasn’t able to mount a challenge, eventually settling for the spot in the Final while Klara Andersson took the final spot.

The curiosity in the Final was to see how Kristoffersson would act coming from the outside, but a slow reaction at the start meant that not he lost Timo Scheider, but also he was shoved to the outside to allow Kevin Hansen to get second place. Not wanting to stay stuck with the leading pack, Kristoffersson went for a halfway Joker Lap, but Kevin Hansen had him barely covered, so it would depend of Scheider’s Joker.

Despite an awkward exit in his Joker Lap, Scheider still commanded the field, and with Kevin Hansen busy defending from Kristoffersson, Scheider had to keep the pace and the car out of Hansen’s reach to win the Final.

Cape Town RX 2 - Event results

Johan Kristoffersson tops the table with 107 points while Kevin Hansen has 71 and Scheider has 68, with Grönholm being the last driver with mathematical chances of dethroning Kristoffersson with his 63 points, but pretty much all contenders would depend of retirement or elimination in the Semifinals from Kristoffersson to keep the hopes alive past the first round of the Hong Kong RX double header, which will be held on 11 and 12 November.
