Engel wins Macau GT Cup Qualifying Race

After all the complications lived in Chinese territory and at the neighborhood, the Macau GT Cup was able to get going again with international drivers in the field, and in typical Macau fashion, a shortened Qualifying Race ended Maro Engel putting the No. 77 CRAFT Bamboo Mercedes AMG GT3 Evo on top.

Edoardo Mortara was the polesitter by right, but a penalty would see him start from the pits, which was turned into a start from the back as his No. 10 Absolute Audi followed the Course Car to the grid, which promoted the No. 77 CRAFT Bamboo Mercedes of Maro Engel to the pole.

Seconds after the green flag, excessive contact right after the line triggered a chain reaction where Congfu Cheng, Adderly Fong, Heng Min and Darryl O’Young were sent spinning to the Turn 1 outside wall, which meant an immediate red flag. Mortara was caught in the madness, but his Audi suffered minor damage and keep its way, following the other competitors into the pits.

Some minutes were needed to clear the track, and the restart was in single file with Engel leading the field. As Engel and Raffaele Marciello were moving away, Alexandre Imperatori intensified the pressure on Kang Ling, and this urgency increased as Mortara was already fifth after passing Chang Chien Shang. After failing to overtake Kang, Imperatori lost the ideal line, and by consequence, the fourth place to Mortara.

Engel and Marciello were pretty much securing the finish in the Final Lap, while Kang shut the door on Mortara to keep the third place, and while Engel and Marciello secured a Mercedes 1-2 and the Main Race front row, Kang kept his No. 4 Phantom Pro Lamborghini on the podium.
