K-PAX completes Sonoma sweep with Race 2 win

It was the K-PAX Racing show at the FANATEC GT World Challenge America opener at Sonoma, but the Race 2 win for the No. 1 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo of Jordan Pepper and Andrea Caldarelli wasn’t as easier as the Race 1’s, with the No. 6 US Racetronics Mercedes offering some kind of resistance during the race.

The No. 1 K-PAX Lamborghini had the company of the No. 6 US Racetronics Mercedes in the front row, and both K-PAX entries opted for going safe at the start, letting the No. 6 go while the No. 3 Lamborghini fell to the No. 93 Racers Edge Acura pass for third.

While the No. 1 was sitting in second and waiting for a gap, Giacomo Altoé made no ceremony and got rough into the No. 93, putting the No. 3 K-PAX Lamborghini in fourth, just behind the No. 33 Winward Mercedes, all while the No. 93 lost the Pro-Am Cup lead to the No. 45 Wright Porsche.

After being locked behind the No. 6 for the whole first stint, K-PAX put their cards on an efficient pit stop, which worked well as the No. 1 was fairly ahead of the No. 6, and to make matters worse for Steven Aghakhani, the right front tire had a puncture, effectively knocking the Mercedes out of contention for the win.

With the No. 08 DXDT Mercedes finding the wall right after the pit window, the Safety Car was called, which would offer an opportunity for Russel Ward in the No. 33 Winward Mercedes to challenge Jordan Pepper, but a slide in the restart meant that he couldn’t get close to the No. 1 K-PAX Lamborghini. With Ward not being able to match Pepper’s pace, he had to watch from a 20 second gap the No. 1 K-PAX Lamborghini to complete the weekend sweep.

In the Pro-Am Cup, the No. 45 Wright Porsche held the lead, and a combination of Jan Heylen’s pace and Charlie Luck’s resilience gave them the class win over a charging No. 93 Racers Edge Acura. The No. 61 AF Corse Ferrari completed the list of class winners with a slightly comfortable Am Cup win.

Next double header in the schedule is next month with the debut of Ozarks International Raceway in the series, set for 21-22 May.
