Peter Hedström goes to World RX

After announcing the Russian Timur Timerzyanov for a Barcelona RX one-off, GRX-SET will make another driver happy, as Peter Hedström will step in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as the Finnish team’s third entry, serving his old team mate Marcus Grönholm.

Hedström has been splitting himself between managing the team, Hedströms Motorsport, and his own driving appearances, being an Euro RX regular and bringing other drivers with him in the team’s fleet of Volkswagen Polo RXs, but the Swede will go out of his comfort zone to drive a Hyundai i20 RX, or more specifically, the third GRX-SET car, which was the second full time car last year, being in the hands of Timur Timerzyanov, but somehow it was relegated to a part time option due to Krisztián Szábo getting the 2019 third car to go for a full time World RX campaign.

Hedström actually needed some convincing and negotiation to change his path, as shortage of parts and up-to-date Volkswagen Polos made him and his partners start looking for alternatives, with the end result being the acquisition of GRX’s “spare car”. Hedström’s Polos were actually given to other drivers like Anders Michalak and former EKS and GCK driver Anton Marklund, leaving him with no machine at all.

The enthusiasm towards the new and proven machine is seen as Hedström started going after more sponsors to actually have an extended schedule, which includes visiting Arvika for the Rallycross-SM and the RallyX Nordic finale as competitive tests for the World RX debut at Höljes RX, which couldn’t be a better scenario, as it combines competing at home soil and nearby places in the space of just a week between them. And the Swedish adventure isn’t the end of the line, as other events are in consideration if the budget is there, but whether it will be in World RX or Euro RX remains unknown.

The Höljes RX will be held on 22 August, while the World RX season starts with the Barcelona RX on 24 July. The Euro RX season starts at the Höljes RX weekend.
