Montalegre in and Hell out in latest World RX calendar update

One of the toughest challenges of the new promoter of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Rallycross Promoter GmbH, is securing a calendar for 2021 with the ever changing situation that most countries are facing,  but seven venues and eight rounds were confirmed in a major shakeup in the schedule.

The first update released in March eliminated the possibility of overseas rounds by chopping off Abu Dhabi and Cape Town, with Kouvola also saying bye again after returning in 2020.

This second update confirms that the Hell RX, expected to open the season in June, was cancelled, while Montalegre rejoins the competition, but instead of being the traditional season opener, it will act as the season finale, with Barcelona having the honor of receiving the competitors first, in a delayed start set for late July.

The rest of the calendar changes were related to dates, in a format that would secure conditions for teams and staff from a health standpoint, but also will open the possibility of receiving fans at the venues after more than a year away from the grandstands and camp sites.

After the Barcelona RX opener, Nürburgring keeps the double header that will be its debut after the cancelation of the 2020 event, resulting in a premature end for the season. The Magic Weekend at Höljes comes right after, with the Lohéac RX opening the September works.

Despite not having a full agreement, Riga will stay in the calendar and will be the sixth round, with the Spa RX being moved to the penultimate slot to give way to Montalegre.

In all rounds the World RX will have at least one support competition, with the new FIA RX2e Series and the FIA Euro RX3, for Super 1600 cars, having the most dates with 5 each. At the Höljes RX and Lohéac RX, the two most traditional events in the calendar, all categories will be present, meaning packed weekends for fans on site if deemed possible.
