PK Carsport triumphs in GT2 European Sunday Race

The first weekend of Fanatec GT2 European Series at Monza ended with some problems for the competitors but at the same time some fierce action towards the leading pack, with the No. 81 PK Carsport Audi R8 LMS GT2 of Bert Longin and Peter Guelincx bringing the Belgian squad back to victory in an SRO-sanctioned competition, with the last triumphs dating back from the last decade in the defunct FIA GT Championship.

In a strange move, the polesitter No. 44 SVC Lamborghini went straight into the pits with the suspicion of problems before the green flag, only to return almost immediately, which actually opened the way to a KTM domination, with REITER having the No. 24 KTM in control of the race with the No. 7 KTM right behind and looking for a move.

Despite the rest of the competition keeping a close look in the top spots, the pair of KTMs in front hogged the front of the field in their particular fight for first place, but a spin for the No. 7 put it out of the fight and in a recovery drive, leaving the No. 24 all alone in the lead.

The pit window changed the order a lot, putting the No. 81 PK Carsport Audi in front as the No. 24 REITER KTM hit trouble going to the pits, with the No. 88 LP Racing Audi slotting in second and the No. 7 REITER KTM compensating for the earlier mistake in third place, though Adrian Spescha couldn’t keep up with the pace being set by the frontrunning pack being led by Bert Longin.

The No. 88 tried hard to close down and put up a fight, but the No. 81 PK Carsport Audi was in a safe position, with Longin going straight to the checkered flag to the get Race 2 win.

The No. 7 REITER KTM was still able to score the Am Cup win despite tumbling down the order, with the fight with the No. 24 KTM being at the middle of the field instead of the front.

Unlike most series under the SRO umbrella that follow the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe, the Fanatec GT2 European Series will follow its own calendar with standalone events, with the next one being at Hockenheim, in Germany, on 14 & 15 May, when the endurance-oriented GT2-only competition called GT Rebellion Series kicks off.
