SRO presents GT World Challenge Australia

SRO
continues the expansion of not only its brand but also of its flagship series, as Australia is the next destination of the French organization with the creation of the GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS.

The newest ramification of the GT World Challenge series will follow the example of the American counterpart will take an active competition to run, which is the Australian GT Championship, in action since the 60s but counting with the latest GT machinery since 2007 in its modern rebirth.

Like the case with GT World Challenge America, which stayed in the hands of SCCA before getting into SRO’s hands, GT World Challenge Australia will stay with its promoter ARG as it receives help from SRO, while also abiding to SRO’s regulations and Balance of Performance system but staying as a sprint series. The adjacent Australian Endurance Championship turns from a full season series into a one-off race with three or four hours, still pending confirmation, which is also likely to follow the calendar format of the other GTWC series with an endurance round to complement the sprint season.

Australia is in the SRO route because of the Bathurst 12 Hour since it opens the Intercontinental GT Challenge season as GT3s and GT4s from local and overseas teams compete for points in the globe-trotting series, and the Australasia region was likely to be host of series of endurance races set to be organized by SRO, with the plans being folded months later.

The GT World Challenge Australia will be integrated into the overall GT World Challenge manufacturers table, so the brands involved in it can nominate local drivers to score manufacturer points for the series, which will be added to the standings from the American, Asian and European series.

Even though the GT World Challenge Australia calendar still needs to be decided, the series will start its new phase already in 2021, with this and more details coming later.
