World RX season to open with trio of double headers

The FIA World Rallycross Championship calendar is still facing some changes, even though there are two months to go until the championship debut, and the promoter IMG is trying to make the most out of what they have, like including extra rounds in venues are confirmed.

Along with the news that the Kouvola RX will return as the second round of the championship in late August, organized by SET Promotion and sponsored by CapitalBox, the extra detail is that the Finnish round will join Höljes and Riga as the venues that will have double headers, with the whole schedule set to be held in a single day while the next will see a new one, taking place of the slightly more relaxed two-day approach of a weekend with a single round.

IMG isn’t dealing with double header rallycross weekends for the first time, as the promoter’s North American competition, Americas Rallycross Championship, had double headers in 2018 and 2019, and although this was mostly the case with the ARX2 class, the supercars had their time at Gateway last year. Outside the IMG umbrella, the 2019 RallyX Nordic season opened with a double header at Höljes, and so will be the case with the 2020 season opener, set to return to the Swedish venue.

While the Riga double header will be a standalone event in September, the final days of August will be something like a marathon for the World RX teams as a single week separates the Höljes and Kouvola weekends, which means that damage control will be the name of the game as not only the thought for the next will need to be made carefully, with limited time for repairs and setup changes at disposal.

The opening trio of the 2020 World RX calendar keeps their dates unchanged, with the Höljes RX being held on 22nd and 23rd August, followed by the Kouvola RX on 29th and 30th August, and the Riga RX will be held on 19th and 20th September. Spa-Francorchamps, Montalegre, Barcelona, Abu Dhabi and Nürburgring complete the season.
