An extra hour for the 24 Hours of Spa

The 2020 edition of the TOTAL 24 Hours of Spa will be already an unusual one for a couple of reasons, and the end of the daylight saving time in the region adds literally an extra factor in the long and punishing Belgian classic.

The date of the 24 Hours of Spa will be in the same day that the Central European Summer daylight saving time ending, meaning all clocks will need to be adjusted one hour back at 3 A.M. on Sunday, and with the race going on in the middle of it, SRO decided to add and extra hour to compensate the schedule and keep the finish time at the same 3:30 P.M., while still keep the 24 hours in the name.

Along the time change, which is a first for the event, the change of date for the middle of the autumn add to the weather element of what’s already unpredictable race in its usual summer date, considering that you can have editions with clear weather, period of some rain or total washouts like the one that red flagged the 2019 edition for six hours. Talking about time, the activities will start off track on Wednesday as usual, especially considering that a number of support races will be in action during the week, with Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe, GT4 European Series, Formula Renault Eurocup and an unusual addition of TCR Europe warming up the week.

25 hour races at Spa-Francorchamps are far from uncommon, as the VW Fun Cup, dedicated to modified Beetles holds its main event in this format and features fields of more than 100 cars with ease, having some big name drivers and squads added in the mix.

Tickets are on sale for the race but spectator access may be restricted as part of the health and safety protocol that SRO will use for the whole season in order to prevent cases of COVID-19 in the working staff and drivers.

The 2020 24 Hours of Spa, valid for the GT World Challenge Europe as well for the Intercontinental GT Challenge, will be held on 24th and 25th October will the full timetable still needing confirmation.
