Shakeup in GT World Challenge Asia axes Suzuka round

With no predictable scenario about a way out of the COVID-19 crisis, sports events in general are still adjusting their calendars to at least try to kick off a season later in the year, and this promoted some changes to the GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS too.

In normal conditions we would have the 2020 calendar already running while aiming towards a October ending, but not only the Sepang and Buriram rounds were postponed, leading to a start at Fuji Speedway in late May, but Autopolis also emerged as part of a contingency plan, similar to what Imola is to the GT World Challenge Europe.

Along with what happened until the moment, Fuji was moved to a slot that will be accommodated either in late July or early August as the venue won’t be used for the Summer Olympics this year, allowing for greater freedom of maneuver, while Sepang is now the season finale on December 5th and 6th. To give an idea on how late will end the 2020 season, none of the previous ones ended after October.

Only Shanghai is keeping the dates for its sprint and endurance rounds in place, with the sprint weekend in September while the debuting Shanghai 888 will be held in mid-October. Also, despite the announced start at Autopolis, SRO has alternatives if in need of further calendar changes.

2020 GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS calendar:

Autopolis - July 11th and 12th
Fuji - July 25th and 26th/August 1st and 2nd
Shanghai - September 12th and 13th
Shanghai 888 - October 18th
Sepang - December 5th and 6th
