Optimum Motorsport puts McLaren 720S in GT World Challenge Europe

The entry of the McLaren 720S GT3 in GT World Challenge Europe was expected since its announcement, though the series fans and Assetto Corsa Competizione players haven’t had the pleasure to see the British supercar on it in 2019. This changes for real in 2020, as Optimum Motorsport announced it will field an example of the 720S in the renamed competition.

The British team also beats some sure bets for the first one to field a 720S GT3 in GT World Challenge Europe, as the teams that use the car in the continent stuck to series outside the main SRO scope, like Teo Martin Motorsport in International GT Open and British GT. Despite this, Optimum Motorsport won’t the overall GT World Challenge debutant of the 720S, as ABSSA Racing had the honor in Asia last year.

Having the British GT and the International GT Open in their schedule in 2019, as well a national title in 2018, Optimum Motorsport isn’t joining GT World Challenge out of nowhere, though the change to McLaren machinery comes as they leave the recent years as a faithful Aston Martin customer behind, with only Ollie Wilkinson staying in, now being named a McLaren Professional Driver, and the Pro Cup entry will be entirely justified by those who will be alongside him, with McLaren factory drivers Rob Bell and Joe Osborne completing the lineup with a bunch of SRO GT experience.

Curiously the last team that ran with McLaren in GT World Challenge Europe did the other way round, as Garage 59 switched to Aston Martin once the 2018 season ended.

The 2020 GT World Challenge Europe season will start on April 19th with the Monza Endurance Cup round, which will be the debut of the new car.
