Game over for Americas Rallycross

The 2019 Americas Ralllycross Championship season ended with the only thing certain being the nominated champions, Tanner Foust and Fraser McConnell, while the rest was covered in a cloud of uncertainty, which had a turn for the worse last Friday (15), as IMG decided to not continue the competition.

The statement from IMG is as follows: “After consultation with a wide group of stakeholders and interested parties, IMG has taken the difficult decision to not extend the Americas Rallycross Championship beyond the 2019 season. We would like to thank our passionate fans, teams, drivers, partners and event hosts for their support and participation in Americas Rallycross.”

With the news that Volkswagen was calling off an end to the production of the road going Beetle, this would mean the end of the support to Andretti Autosport, which prettyn much eliminated two cars from the grid, which only aggravated the fact that the competition struggled for entries, even despite the fact that the 2019 season was more competitive than 2018.

Counting both the ARX supercar division and the ARX2, only once the car count reached double digits, with the average being eight, so qualification barely had any meaning besides deciding the order for semifinals.

Aside the low numbers, the players remained committed to ARX, as Subaru, Volkswagen Andretti and Loenbro Motorsports took part of the two seasons, with extra entries at the Silverstone debut in 2018 and extra participations for Liam Doran, René Münnich and Oliver Bennett. In 2019 this barely failed to materialize, as only Subaru brought extra entries to the final rounds.

A total of 20 drivers and 10 squads committed at least once to ARX in the supercar division, while in ARX2 16 drivers from 4 teams were in. The competition folds with the interesting fact there was no back to back titles, as Scott Speed and Tanner Foust were supercar champions while Conner Martell and Fraser McConnell were crowned with the ARX2 title.
