Foust dominates ARX at COTA

Tanner Foust had to face a Subaru fleet attack during the Americas Rallycross Championship round at the Circuit of the Americas, but neither the title contenders nor the wildcards Andreas Bakkerud and Joni Wiman were able to stop an incredible weekend from the Volkswagen Andretti driver, which gave him prime position in the 2019 title race.

Despite a poor performance in Q2, Foust showed that he came to dominate, winning both Q1 and Q3 without giving a chance to the competition, becoming the top qualifier with Andreas Bakkerud and Chris Atkinson behind him.

Semifinal 1 had another rocket start from Foust while the Subarus of Sandell, Atkinson and Joni Wiman were trying to catch up with the Volkswagen Beetle RX. In fact, Foust was so committed that he basically kept a lone run to the win, while Sandell barely held Atkinson for second, but for the Subaru driver, this wasn’t position from the championship standpoint.

On semifinal 2 two cars went to each route with Andreas Bakkerud going for the lead and leaving a minimum gap to Steve Arpin. Arpin got slotted between Cabot Bigham and Travis Pecoy after the Joker, and Bakkerud’s track position was beneficial to come in as leader after the Joker, needing only to hold Bigham to get the race win.

In the Final, Bakkerud departed from second and forced all the way to hold station from Bigham and pass Foust, though the Andretti driver was still in the chase. Bakkerud and Foust then started trading blows until Foust settled for first, though the three Subarus were in his back wing.

When both went to the Joker, Foust had the upper hand over Sandell and Bakkerud, and he just had to push hard to get free from the Subarus and win the race.

After the race Bakkerud got a five second penalty due to excessive contact, so Arpin got the third place.

Foust has 125 points as the leader while Sandell has 108, Atkinson has 106 and Steve Arpin has 101, so basically all contenders will need a perfect to take the title from Foust at Mid-Ohio on October 6th.
