Foust leads Volkswagen Andretti 1-2 in ARX of Canada

After what can only be described as an early slump from Tanner Foust, the Volkswagen Andretti driver was able to break the Subaru winning streak and return to great form with the win in the ARX of Canada at Trois-Rivières

Patrik Sandell and a brave Travis Pecoy took the Saturday qualifying heats, with the rain contributing for Pecoy in the second one as the Subarus demonstrated quite a weakness in wet conditions, especially on dirt.

Sandell won again in Q3 but the VW Andretti Beetles had growing pace, which allowed Tanner Foust to get Q4. Sandell still ended as the top qualifier, but having Foust in second with the Beetle RX and Travis Pecoy in third with the Ford Fiesta ST RX gave the sign that things were on level for anyone to go and get it.

Semifinal 1 started with Sandell holding Chris Atkinson and Cabot Bigham for a moment until he lost control on Turn 2, which allowed Bigham to go past the Swede. Sandell was in position to pass Bigham, but wasn’t finding the room for it, and even all the clear air of the World couldn’t help Atkinson in front, with both Subarus watching Bigham go away in front and win the race.

Semifinal 2 had Scott Speed going like a rocket to first place and defending his place from Tanner Foust while Steve Arpin sneaked into second place. Arpin transitioned from defensive to offensive and went all out on Speed, and the turnaround came in the last corner, where Speed had a misfire, let the pack close in and then saw Arpin and Foust go first and second on the main straight as his Subaru limped to the line.

Subaru Motorsports USA crew had to race against time to work on Speed’s car, which worked well at the end, though the Subaru drivers had to see Foust and Bigham monopolize the front at the start of the Final, and although Foust carried on the lead, some pace was lost from Lap 5, though there wasn’t a position change in the final lap, meaning that Foust won and led Andretti’s 1-2 over Bigham, while Scott Speed escaped the mess of the back of the pack and finished third.

Speed still leads the table with 100 points, though Foust is closing in from second with 95 points, while Sandell remains the nearest outsider in the title battle with 86 points.

A stop of almost two months will the ARX go back to action only on September 28th, with the Circuit of the Americas, the first ARX track on home soil, being the host of the event.
