WRT confirms big Blancpain GT effort

Few teams can be proud of having a long relationship with a manufacturer as W Racing Team has with Audi Sport, and in the celebration of 10 years of the Belgian team, Yves Weerts and Vincent Vosse will bring their always big Blancpain GT Series efforts in sprint and endurance racing.

To give a sample of how important this is, WRT simply used every iteration of the Audi R8 LMS in GT3 form, and the team took part in every Blancpain GT season since the early years of the Blancpain Endurance Series, being Endurance Cup champion team five times with three drivers titles, and also being the undefeated team in Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe, with three drivers titles.

The Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe campaign will feature four cars, putting WRT with the largest effort in the series, with two Pro Cup cars and two Silver Cup ones. Dries Vanthoor will see Argentine driver Ezequiel Perez Companc join WRT as his team mate after being part of Grässer Racing Team. The second Pro car will feature Christopher Mies and Charles Weerts, with Mies being known for his track record with Audi and Weerts joining after being part of the WRT-run Belgium squad in the FIA GT Nations Cup.

One of the Silver Cup cars will see Oscar Tunjo being joined by Rik Breukers, also coming from Lamborghini, while the fourth car will have Supercars driver Shae Davies joining Ginetta Junior champion Tom Gamble.

As for the Endurance Cup, three R8 LMS models will be aligned, with Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe runner-up Alex Riberas joining Perez Companc and Vanthoor in the Pro Cup car, with the Silver Cup being the destination of the other two entries, as gamer-turned-racer Ricardo Sanchez joins Breukers and Weerts after leaving Nissan, and Shae Davies will have the company of former FIA WEC and WTCC racer Alex McDowell and prototype racer Paul Petit, debuting in GT racing after three years driving LMP2 and LMP3 machinery.

The quest for Blancpain GT titles will start with the Endurance Cup at Monza on April 14th, while the Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe team title defence will start at Brands Hatch on May 4th and 5th. The team also confirmed presence at the IGTC’s California 8 Hours on March 30th with a single car for Christopher Haase, Dries Vanthoor and Frédéric Vervisch.
