Speed claims ARX title as Foust wins at COTA

And the first Americas Rallycross Championship season is officially over after another spectacle from the Volkswagen Andretti Beetles of Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, with the former getting the event win at the Circuit of the Americas and the latter claiming the title.

On semifinal 1 Tanner Foust led the pack while a tap from Chris Atkinson sent Oliver Bennett to the barriers and a halt. Steve Arpin then dedicated himself to chase Foust, and although the gap was close between them, the pace to attack wasn’t there for Arpin, so he saw Foust go away and settled for second as Toomas Heikkinen was closing on him and finished third.

The second semifinal saw Ken Block go after Scott Speed while Liam Doran went after Patrik Sandell, which involved a nudge in the back of the Swede’s Subaru and sent him to a stop. Speed was opening the gap to Block, and this was more than enough to secure victory, and behind them Sandell chased Doran and went past him, and due to the puncture on Doran’s Megane, Sandell wasn’t threatened and got straight to the final.

The Andretti Beetles we locking the front row in the final with the Hoonigan Fords behind, and splitting strategies was the thinking for Speed and Foust, who dominated the field and were clean between each other while Arpin was in hopes of holding Heikkinen and Sandell. Foust was taking more risks so he was faster and his win couldn’t be with more ease, while Speed came in second and Arpin was able to the Subarus to come home third.

Scott Speed was already the first ARX champion after the semifinals and ended the championship with 112 points against 107 of Tanner Foust and 75 of Sandell. Despite turning up late to the party, Kem Block still finished fourth in the standings with 68 points.
