AKKA-ASP Mercedes wins Race 2 at Hungaroring

The second race of the Blancpain GT Sprint Cup at Hungaroring was marked by more rain, more mess between the contenders and a well deserved win for the No. 88 AKKA-ASP Mercedes AMG GT3 of Raffaele Marciello and Michael Meadows, having a safe race as all attempts to challenge their lead came to failure.

As the example of Saturday, rain was a factor to consider at Hungaroring, and even though it was light at the moment of the Race 2, the track was incredibly soaked and with some big puddles, so all competitors would have to go to full wet tires at least.

As track condition was deemed as treacherous the start of the race was behind the Safety Car, and after almost ten minutes there was the green flag, with practically everybody playing it safe and the No. 88 AKKA-ASP Mercedes keeping the first position. The race soon was monopolized by the Mercedes AMG GT3 as the No. 88 was followed the No. 6 Black Falcon car, while the No. 63 GRT Lamborghini was nowhere near them.

The No. 63 was able to make up for the lost time during the pit window, eventually catching the No. 6, but a pit stop infringement penalty ruled it out of the lead battle, with it becoming a Mercedes versus Audi clash. After a brief Safety Car period all contenders for the win were close, and while the No. 88 AKKA-ASP Mercedes was establishing a gap the No. 6 Black Falcon Mercedes saw its attempts to go back to second be ruined and was gobbled down by a huge Audi pack.

The No. 88 had the No. 1 WRT Audi and the No. 25 Saintéloc Audi behind it, but a series of mistakes from both Alex Riberas and Simon Gachet gave made things easy for Michael Meadows to guide the No. 88 to victory, while the No. 25 and the No. 66 Attempto Audi completed the podium.

The No. 87 AKKA-ASP Mercedes led a 1-2 for the French team in the Silver Cup, while the No. 26 Saintéloc Audi won a troubled race in the Pro-Am Cup.

Nürburgring will be the host of the final double header of the 2018 Sprint Cup season in two weeks, on September 15th and 16th.
