Misano sweep for WRT after Race 2 win

It was Audi domination again at Misano, and WRT was responsible for it, with Alex Riberas and Christopher Mies repeating their feat from Race 1 and winning the Race 2 of the Blancpain GT Sprint Cup at the Italian circuit.

The No. 88 AKKA-ASP Mercedes barely held the lead at the start as the No. 1 WRT Audi used even a bit of the grass to advance to second place. At the back of the field the No. 31 Parker Bentley went from a spin to a back end impact to the wall at the main straight, but was able to carry on and the race stayed on green flag.

Raffaelle Marciello was managing to keep the lead in the No. 88, until an incorrect approach to a corner destroyed the left front corner of the Mercedes, though no suspension damage was detected, and with a puncture appearing for the No. 82 GRT Lamborghini, the way was totally open again for the No. 1 WRT Audi.

After the pit window, it was Audi in the overall top-5 with the Nos. 1 and 2 WRT cars leading. While things were more than settled for overall honors, the Silver Cup had another clash between the No. 54 Emil Frey Jaguar and the No. 90 AKKA-ASP Mercedes, now fighting for third, and after some good pressure, the No. 90 wasn’t able to pass and spun after contact, leaving the class for the No. 54. With nothing more to be decided, the No. 1 WRT Audi cruised to the line to get another win while the No. 2 WRT Audi finished in second.

The No. 87 AKKA-ASP Mercedes had its redemption on Sunday and won the Silver Cup, while the No. 26 Saintéloc Audi also completed a class sweep with another Pro-Am Cup win.

Riberas and Mies are leading the Sprint Cup standings with 66,5 points against 43,5 of Marciello, Meadows and Stuart Leonard, 43 of Kelvin van der Linde and Steijn Schothorst, and 42,5 of Dries Vanthoor and Will Stevens. Between the teams, WRT dominates with 88,5 points against 61,6 of AKKA-ASP and 57 of Attempto Racing.

The Sprint Cup will resume its activities only on August 31st at the Hungaroring, as late June and July are dedicated to the TOTAL 24 Hours of Spa.
