WRT gets Race 1 win at Brands Hatch

Despite heavy pressure during most of the race, the No. 2 WRT Audi of Dries Vanthoor and Will Stevens was victorious in the first race at Brands Hatch for the Blancpain GT Sprint Cup, leading an Audi pack that in the end took two of the three podium spots.

The Audi front row lock was helped at the start by the No. 1 WRT Audi as well for an off from the No. 35 SMP Mercedes, which brought a yellow flag period to the track. It didn't take much to return to green as the beached car was returned to the track, but the Audi 1-2-3 remained unchanged.

Christian Engelhardt in the No. 63 GRT Lamborghini was impressing in his recovery race, jumping from last to 13th in less than 15 minutes, which eventually turned into 10th place in the hands of Mirko Bortolotti.

After the pit window Audi was still dominating with the No. 2 WRT Audi had the No. 66 Attempto car at bay while the No. 1 WRT Audi was in full charge of the leaders as the gap was closing, with the No. 88 AKKA-ASP Mercedes joining the pack.

The four cars stayed close until the final minutes, when the tires gone in the No. 66, allowing not only the No. 1 to pass, but also the No. 88 in a bold late maneuver for third, and with all threats left behind, the No. 2 car just had to cruise to victory.

Pro-Am Cup honors went to the No. 39 TP12 Kessel Ferrari, while the Silver Cup win went to the No. 37 3Y BMW as the leading No. 90 AKKA-ASP Mercedes threw away the win with a spin in the final minutes.

UPDATE: The No. 37 3Y BMW was disqualified due to not respecting a black and orange flag, so the Silver Cup win was handed to the No. 31 Team Parker Bentley.
