The FIA WEC is back to Brazil

After various years of absence after being one of the original venues of the FIA World Endurance Championship, Interlagos is making a comeback that will start in the next season of the globetrotting competition.

The announcement of the return of the 6 Hours of São Paulo was made this Thursday (22) in a press conference held at São Paulo with FIA WEC CEO Gerard Neveu alongside Nicolas Duduch from N Duduch Motorsports, the new promotional agency of the event, and LMP2 champion Bruno Senna, who will act as the ambassador of the race.

It was confirmed that the race will have a multi-year deal but there isn’t a certain date yet, which was announced to be disclosed once the new calendar announcement arrives, something that may come in mid-2018.

The 6 Hours of São Paulo were ran straight as part of FIA WEC from 2012 to 2014, being also the venue of the first of many victories of the now parked Porsche 919 Hybrid, and was replaced by the 6 Hours of Nürburgring due to financial difficulties during the era when Emerson Fittipaldi was in charge of the event, and once the event arrives at Brazil again, not only the upcoming privateer LMP1s will be a new sight, but also the LMP2s and LMGTEs under the new regulations that were introduced during the time São Paulo was out.

The current FIA WEC grid lacks a Brazilian team but has saw an increase in the driver department, as Bruno Senna himself is part of Rebellion Racing in LMP1, André Negrão and Fernando Rees will race for Signatech Alpine and Larbre Competition in LMP2, and Augusto Farfus is part of the BMW Team MTEK in the LMGTE-Pro class, while Pietro Fittipaldi and IndyCar racer Tony Kanaan will race under partial programs through the 2018/2019 Super Season.

For Fernando Rees this will be like a second comeback, as not only he took part of the three races during the FIA WEC era and also had a class win at the 2007 Mil Milhas Brasil, which was part of the Le Mans Series that year.
