Rebellion Racing is practically an entity of the LMP1 class, passing almost most of its history in the top prototype class, and after a one year break to compete in LMP2, the Swiss squad is returning to top honors in the FIA World Endurance Championship, again investing heavily to stay fast.
The speculation of a return to LMP1 had quite a few weeks but fundamentally it all started back when they were switching classes in the end of 2016, as the option of a switch was chosen because there wouldn’t be enough time to build a new car once the class regulations for privateer teams were clarified, as well as the equalization with manufacturer hybrids, and this Wednesday (13) came the official announcement of the comeback, with a still to be decided package, as chassis, engine and tire partner choices remain a complete mystery.
The only thing that the team already confirmed are the lineups for its two car effort, with only Mathias Beche having been part of the team in the previous LMP1 effort with the Rebellion R-One built with Oreca. Also, Brazilian driver Bruno Senna is the only other one remaining from the team that was LMP2 World Champion this year, with big stars being brought in.
Two of them come from the LMP2 rivals Jackie Chan DC Racing and Signatech Alpine pool, as rising star Thomas Laurent comes in alongside of Gustavo Menezes, and the final two members of the team come from the now closed LMP1 program from Porsche, being them multiple Le Mans winner André Lotterer and 2015 FIA WEC champion Neel Jani. By coincidence, Laurent and Menezes were team mates at DC Racing, and Lotterer and Jani shared the No. 1 Porsche this season, so team chemistry will play a huge part in this effort, other than talent alone.
The cars to be used in the Super Season will be revealed at Geneva in March.
