Good grid numbers for the FIA GT World Cup

The field for the 2018 FIA GT World Cup at Macau is stronger than ever, with no manufacturer refraining from bringing their best drivers available to the famous street circuit, with a total of 20 cars representing seven manufacturers.

Audi conquered Macau last year but their champion driver isn’t with the brand anymore, and they now rely in more names spread between their five cars, all of them with factory support. Audi Sport Team WRT comes with Blancpain GT Sprint champion Robin Frijns and multi-task driver Nico Müller, and HCB-Rutronik-Racing sees the support rise as Fabian Plentz returns in company of Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi with another two cars. Aust Motorsport completes the list with a single car for Markus Pommer.

Talking about champions, Porsche will count with the services of flipping champion Laurens Vanthoor in one of the CRAFT-Bamboo Racing cars while the other stays with Darryl O’Young. The other two cars are from Super Taikyuu and China GT outfit HubAuto Racing, with FIA WEC champion Romain Dumas and Hiroki Yoshimoto at the wheel of each car.

BMW also brought their stars to their four M6 GT3 machines spread between three teams. The Team Schnitzer brings Augusto Farfus in their single car while ROWE Racing brings Tom Blonqvist, while the other two cars are brought by Asian LMS team FIST Team AAI as DTM’s Marco Wittmann and Australian Supercars’ Chaz Mostert were selected to drive them.

The Mercedes side also comes in a big fleet with another four cars, with their usual Academy team coming with Edoardo Mortara and Daniel Juncadella coming fresh from the Blancpain GT season, while Blancpain GT Series Asia champions GruppeM Racing have Raffaele Marciello and Maro Engel doing the driving, leaving Maximilain Buhk and Hunter Abbott out of the race.

The other manufacturers come with a single car each, as Honda brings the NSX GT3 for a worldwide debut with Renger van der Zande, Lamborghini comes with Asian outfit FFF Racing by ACM with a Huracán GT3 for Mirko Bortolotti, and IMSA and PWC squad Scuderia Corsa is the suprise Ferrari representatitve as they bring rising star Felix Rosenqvist to drive for them.

The FIA GT World Cup will be on November 18th and 19th with a qualifying race and then the main race to decide the title.
