A World Cup for racing fans

Well, the World Cup at Brazil has ended a few weeks ago, with Germany proving their superiority, but the World Cup matter is still in discussion.

But this time the main parts involved in the talks are Stephane Ratel, head of SRO, and FIA. Yeah, you didn't read it wrong, the creator of the Blancpain GT Series and of the Group GT3 and the highest authority in motorsport are intending to create a World Cup.

The whole thing started at December of  2013, when Ratel decided not to retain the FIA naming on what's today known as the Blancpain Sprint Series, and was called FIA GT Series last year.

Ratel wished that GT3 teams from different championships over the globe could take part in a single event, initially with the Sprint Series format in mind, with two one-hour races in a weekend, involving pros and amateurs as drivers, but with cars having drivers of the nationality of the team at least.

The event would occur at the end of each season, maybe under the "FIA GT3 World Cup" name, as Ratel stated that he wanted FIA to organize the rules of the World Cup, such as Balance of Performance and tyre brand to be used. Another matter is finding a circuit to do so.

The idea was well received by teams' bosses, such as WRT's Vincent Vosse, but he explained that components like tyres needed to be of a brand that's normally not used by any series, so the cars of a determined championship wouldn't take advantdge.

Nothing may come to life before 2015 or 2016, but it is an interesting prospect, specially as GT3s are majority in worldwide motorsports, with strong national championships as Australian GT, GT Tour, British GT, GT Asia, Italian GT, International GT Open and many others.
